Fifty years ago, the Bicentennial turned the entire country red, white, and blue. Fire hydrants were painted like Revolutionary soldiers. The U.S. Mint issued special Bicentennial quarters, half-dollars, and dollar coins bearing a dual 1776–1976 date. ABC ran nightly "Bicentennial Minutes" on television, and the American Freedom Train — a steam locomotive hauling priceless artifacts like the original Louisiana Purchase document — toured 48 states.

Fireworks exploding over the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC — Fireworks over the National Mall in Washington, DC — the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and Capitol dome framed by a Fourth of July display, the same skyline at the center of America 250 celebrations.

The climax came on July 4, 1976, when Operation Sail brought a fleet of majestic tall ships from around the world into New York Harbor, watched by millions in person and on television. President Gerald Ford reviewed the fleet, and fireworks lit up the Statue of Liberty. For a country still bruised by Vietnam and Watergate, the Bicentennial was deliberately healing — a reminder, as organizers put it, of what Americans shared. That emotional recipe is one America 250 is consciously trying to repeat.
